North Queensland is a fantastic holiday destination where you will often find accommodation specials and packages that may be attractive to you. During the wet season that extends through the months from December to March it is often hot, wet and rainy and during this period the north is not so popular you are almost certain to find some cheaper rates. South of Cairns are Mission Beach and Townsville. Mission Beach is a popular seaside town with surrounding rainforests and island resorts. Townsville is a major city that has universities, armed forces bases, plenty of shopping and beautiful Magnetic Island just offshore.
