The Northern Territory is the home to the most important Australian Outback tourist attractions of all. At certain times of the year there can be cheaper accommodation, specials, packages and tours on offer to fill seats and beds when the tourist numbers are a bit slower. Most tourists arrive in the Northern Territory through Darwin, which lies in the north of the state and is the territorys largest city. Darwin has lots of accommodation and is the departure point for the Ghan and many coach tours of the state.

Not far from Darwin as you head inland are two of Australia's most beautiful National parks. Litchfield National park is the closest and Kakadu national park is the best known. There is only limited accommodation available in either of these parks so most people come on organised tours or in campervans and motorhomes. The campervan and motorhome industry in the Northern Territory is huge as many international tourists fly in to Darwin and start a circumnavigation of the country from there. The tour industry out of Darwin is also huge with both extended tours and day tours available.

Everyone wants to visit the outback and the icons there. Kakadu and Katherine Gorge are the closest to Darwin. Further to the south is Tennant creek, Alice Springs, Kings Canyon and Ayers rock.
